Position Overview: The English Language Arts Teacher at Pinnacle Charter School is responsible for delivering rigorous, engaging literacy instruction within a competency-based educational framework. Using the EL Education High School Literacy Program and Odell Education curriculum as foundations, this individual will guide students in developing advanced reading comprehension, analytical writing, research skills, and effective communication across genres and media. The English Language Arts Teacher will differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs), and contribute to a school culture where every student feels known, supported, and empowered to express themselves with confidence.
Key Responsibilities: • Plan and deliver standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction for grades 7–12 using the EL Education and Odell Education curriculum frameworks, emphasizing close reading, evidence-based writing, and authentic communication. • Create a classroom environment rooted in curiosity, respect, and high expectations where students feel safe to share ideas, engage in discussion, and develop their unique voices as readers and writers. • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of all students, including those with IEPs, 504 plans, and English language learners. • Design and implement competency-based assessments that measure student mastery of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, providing meaningful feedback that guides student growth. • Develop and facilitate Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs), independent writing projects, and community-based literacy experiences that connect classroom learning to students’ lives and interests. • Integrate technology and the school’s Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence Learning Lab into ELA instruction to enhance research, writing, and multimedia communication skills. • Collaborate with fellow teachers on interdisciplinary curriculum design, project-based learning, and Flexible Friday programming. • Maintain accurate records of student progress within the competency-based grading system and contribute to Individual Learning Plan (ILP) development in partnership with the Guidance Counselor. • Participate actively in the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), contributing to early identification and intervention for students who need additional academic or behavioral support. • Communicate regularly with families about student progress, classroom activities, and opportunities for engagement in their student’s literacy education. • Engage in ongoing professional development, including training in curriculum programs, competency-based practices, and innovative instructional strategies. • Contribute to a positive, collaborative school culture by participating in school events, student advisory, and community-building activities.
Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in English, Creative Writing, Literature, Communications, Journalism, or Education with an English Language Arts concentration. • New Hampshire teaching certification in English Language Arts is valued but not required; candidates without certification who demonstrate strong content knowledge and a passion for teaching will be fully considered. • Experience teaching or mentoring adolescents in a formal or informal educational setting is preferred. • Demonstrated enthusiasm for reading, writing, and the humanities and a genuine commitment to fostering a love of literacy in every student. • Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students and to see and respond to each learner as an individual. • Familiarity with workshop-based, discussion-driven, or competency-based instructional approaches is a plus. • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a small, close-knit teaching team. • Comfort with integrating technology into instruction and a willingness to learn new tools and platforms. • Flexibility, creativity, and a growth mindset—a willingness to iterate, reflect, and continuously improve one’s practice.
